Tree of HeavenIt was late afternoon, and I was eight years old. Walking across the vacant lot near our house, I was looking for wild flowers and dreaming that we lived somewhere else — anywhere else. To me, everything in this neighborhood was old and forgotten. Sometimes it made me feel the same way.

While stepping over the railroad tracks, I noticed this skinny little whisper of a tree with its long leaves. It was growing among others like it, in the dirty dust beside the tracks. The older trees around it were much taller, with large oval-shaped leaves that curved downward along each branch. From a distance, each group of branches looked like open umbrel
